2019-09-19 Just make something

A mans interaction with his tools is a loving, meaningful and spiritual relationship. Bear with me. I can’t explain a relationship mankind has with its tools. In fact, for many years, mankind was defined as toolmakers and tool users. (I know, Jane Goodall stated “Now we must redefine tool, redefine Man, or accept chimpanzees as humans.”). But I believe a almost spiritual bond is created between us. Like a artist with a brush, a tool is to a tradesman. It’s a sight to behold when a skilled individual uses the tools of their trade.

At a young age I had the privilege and help to design and make my own boat. To most people the boat looked like any other, however, it worked for me. For me the boat had a soul. It had a life, because I gave it life. when you make something with your hands, you become part of the item you build.

While power tools are an amazing invention, nothing, NOTHING beats the intimacy of a hand tool. Making a paddle for a boat with nothing but a coping saw and a spoke shave, leaves you with a feeling that cannot be explained.

We live in a modern time of instant gratification, where an app can be downloaded instantly and even food is fast! The time it takes to make something is what helps lead to its creation.

It’s what makes us human.

So pick up your tools, throw on an apron. Build something, and don’t give up. Build it with your hands. Breathe life into something new and become a part of what you make.

Most importantly, JUST MAKE SOMETHING!

Yours, The Enginer’d
